Invited Lecture: Eng. Pedro Martins, Head of Data Engineering at Outsystems!

Our third Invited Lecture is upon us! Eng Pedro Martins, Head of Data Engineering at Outsystems, will come and talk to us about how they do it their neck of the woods, on December 11th! This is another great opportunity for you to see how this is done in real life (and check I haven't been lying to you all throughout the semester) and maybe even do a little networking with a prospective future employer! 

As usual, we're going to do this in the videoconferencing rooms so that students from both campus can attend. To sync the schedules of both Al and TP, this lecture will start at 10:00 *sharp*, and end at 11h00. The rooms will be 0.20 in Pav. Informática II (Alameda, where the dept. study room is), and room 2-N1.5 at Taguspark.

InfoVis in the wild: how it gets used in real life jobs. Come and listen to Eng. Marco Vala, tomorrow at  10:00 *sharp*, in rooms will be 0.20 in Pav. Informática II (Alameda, where the dept. study room is), and room 2-N1.5 at Taguspark. He works at Hitachi Vantara. Come and check it out! It will be one hour well spent.


Office Hours Change

As some of you may have noticed if you tried to meet me today or one week ago, I was not able to be here for the usual office hours schedule. I apologise if that was the case. I've been having previously unscheduled department meetings that have been prolonging themselves unduly, etc. To prevent this from happening again, I'm rescheduling my office hours for Tuesdays, 14h00, Room 531 INESC-ID.

Alberto Cairo in Portugal

Alberto Cairo is Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at University of Miami, and director of the Visualization Program at UM’s Center for Computational Science. He is author of the books Functional Art: An Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization (2012) and The Truthful Art: Data, Charts, and Maps for Communication (2016). You may also see some of his work at http://albertocairo.com.

He will be visiting us as part of his Visual Trumpery Tour (http://trumperytour.com/). where he'll be talking about "How charts lie —and how they make us smarter". This will take place at ISCTE-IUL • Edifício II • Grande Auditório, the 10th of December at 17:30.


Guys, this is a *big deal*. He is an important person in the field, opportunities like this are few and far between. I myself will be there!
