Working Students - mandatory assessment periods (23 and 30 May)

16 maio 2019, 10:02 José Borbinha

We recall working students that in the next two weeks there will be two assessment moments in fixed time periods where all students must be available:

  • 23 May - Presence in person at the Workshop at Alameda in the period 16:30-18:30
  • 30 May - Availability for the final case in the period 15:30-18:30 (students can be remote, but the case is to be made during this precise period of time)
In this sense, justifications for working students for these 2 (TWO) periods can be signed by academia the 23 May (PLEASE BE AWARE YOU MUST BRING FOR THAT PURPOSE THE TWO FORMS).

Final Workshop - 23 May - Room GA4 (ALAMEDA) - 16:30-18:30

16 maio 2019, 09:36 José Borbinha

The Workshop next week (23 May) will be held in ALAMEDA in room GA4 (first floor of the main central building)

The time will be from 16:30 to 18:30, with this program:
  • 16:30 - Welcome opening (with registration of students)
  • 16:45 - Show of the videos
  • 17:45 - open discussion
  • 18:30 - Closing.

We recall that PDF reports have to be upload in FENIX until 14:00 of the 23 May (the SAME day before...)

VERY IMPORTANT:
  1. Also the videos must be available the same time as the reports. As videos can be too large to upload in Fenix, please store them somewhere online with a public URL and in a way that makes it easy to download them, and provide the for that URL in the report, so we can download all videos in advance (the ideal is to have all the videos stored ahead in the local computer to be used in the room).
  2. This workshop is a formal assessment act, equivalent to the usual "project discussion", therefore PRESENCE OF ALL STUDENTS IS MANDATORY (therefore, justifications for employees can be signed for working students). Absence of participation will mean failing the project.

Case G - grades published

16 maio 2019, 08:32 José Borbinha

The grades of Case G are published in the dashboard and detailed in a PDF file in the Case G section in Fenix (this file also has a table showing how the COBIT processes where accessed... the grades for Q2 have decimals because they resulted from an internal formulae we used combining partials from the perceived relevance of each pointed process and also the given justifications).

On a subject we had no time to address...

9 maio 2019, 19:23 José Borbinha

Dear students, in the book we recommend as main bibliography, the section 3.4 is "Exploring Culture and Alignment". "Culture" is a very relevant subject in any corporate scenario, and especially if international.

Unfortunately, we had no time to address this subject properly this semester... :-)
However, there is a FANTASTIC introductory book about the subject, which I believe you all should read, especially if you are pursuing an international career or simply to expect to work often with colleagues of different nationalities (as quite for sure will be the case of 99% of the students)...
This book is the "The Culture Map", by Erin Meyer: https://www.erinmeyer.com/

Very well written, clear and even amusing in many details... Just look for stories of the unfortunate US boss trying to pass the message to the Italian worker he should improve his performance (and not the opposite, as the worker was concluding...). Or the confused US executives by the strange behaviour of their Brazilian colleagues... or the despair of the Germans trying to make business in China... and so on... But the book really is not about anecdotes (even if it has a lot...)! It is a book by an academic, IMHO proposing a credible framework of reference!!!

There is here an interview with the author by the newspaper Público (in Portuguese) ): https://www.publico.pt/2015/11/02/economia/entrevista/a-experiencia-internacional-e-historica-dos-portugueses-dalhes-vantagens-na-globalizacao-1713003

Now that semester is ending, this can be a great read to consider for your summer (I read during the August 2017 while travelling trough the beautiful Corsica, which contrast beach-mountain made the perfect context to enjoy a book like this... but you can just read it at home too ;-)
