Types of liquid-liquid extraction: i) extraction with organic solvents, ii) extraction with reversed micelles; iii) extraction with aqueous two-phase systems, iv) extraction with supercritical fluids. Extraction parameters: partitioning coefficient, extraction factor, extraction yield, selectivity and concentration factor. Batch extraction versus continuous extraction. Single stage extraction versus multistage extraction. Extraction equipment: Mixer-settler, static columns, pulse columns, agitated columns (rotary columns and vibrating plates column), centrifugal extractors.

Precipitation. Types of precipitation: i) pH adjustment; ii) selective denaturation; iii) Addition of precipitants. Selective denaturation: temperature, pH and organic solvents. Addition of precipitant agents: salts, non-ionic polymers, organic solvents, polyelectrolytes and affinity ligands. Salting out and the Cohn equation.
