The lab classes for ADSI will use Microsoft SQL Server 2012. Students that wish to install this DBMS in their personal computers should download the software from the Microsoft Dreamspark website, and they should consider the "Enterprise" version of Microsoft SQL Server 2012.

To download the software, students should access the Dreamspark RNL website (form DEI) using the Fenix authentication. Students that are unable to do this should contact CIIST (ci@ist.utl.pt) and ensure that they are registered as students from LEIC, MEIC or METI, in Alameda or Tagus.

The AdventureWorks sample database, which is distributed with Microsoft SQL Server 2012, will be used in most of the examples from the lab classes. This database may be downloaded from the following URL: http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/93587.

The computers in the rooms that are assigned to the lab classes have all the required software pre-installed.

A tutorial about the usage of SQL Server Management Studio, covering the basic aspects associated to the usage of this administration tool, is available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb934498.aspx.

The lab classes are based on the materials and contents from the following three books:
  • Kalen Delaney et al. (2013) "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Internals", Microsoft Press
  • Grant Fritchey and Sajal Dam (2009) "SQL Server 2008 Query Performance Tuning Distilled", Apress
  • Ken England and Gavin Powell (2007) "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Performance Optimization and Tuning", Elsevier
