Welcome note

The Smart Grid has been evolving by (i) making available a plethora of data from monitoring technologies and (ii) making use of such data to advance grid management and control in order to embed high levels of renewable power generation, storage and flexible loads. The engineering challenge of evolving traditional power systems into a smart grid is huge. From the cyberphysical standpoint, the challenge consists in transforming the largest machine ever made -- the power system -- into the largest robot ever conceived!

This course aims at providing (i) the fundamentals of information and communications technologies necessary to understand the potential and limitations of grids’ wide-area monitoring, (ii) the basics of estimation and control to design supervisory systems that ensure stable and secure interactions with autonomous components and subsystems, (iii) and distributed resource modeling techniques to characterize responsive loads and other relevant state-dependent node behaviors.

The course is organized to progressively introduce the structural properties of electrical grids and the required domain expertise necessary to understand the main cyberphysical challenges in the context of power systems. We will address these challenges sometimes simplifying the issues a lot. The focus is on understanding conceptual difficulties and looking for potential solutions, rather than on dealing with the many contextual details of practical power systems applications.

We believe you will enjoy being introduced to these topics, and that you will learn a lot from thinking about the challenge of smart grids, and we will be happy to help you with that.
