Theme / Challenge

The project theme can be proposed by students during the first weeks of classes or chosen from a list of themes proposed by faculty. It should be put as a challenge that will be addressed throughout the semester. For example:

  • How can we improve the physical rehabilitation experience of patients and therapists in rehabilitation centers?
  • How can we re-design a poker game with IoT devices?
  • How can we augment the situational awareness of visually impaired people in the built environment?
Students will tackle those challenges by proposing and developing an IoT-based solution (device or service).

Read the Guide for a Successful Project.

Dates

Project presentation: December 20th and 21st

Project report: January 22nd

Available Materials

We will provide some prototyping tools that you can use in your project. You can find a list of all available materials, here. If you require additional hardware to develop your project, please get in touch with faculty.

Instructions

The project has 2 main deliverables (presentation + report). Both count for 50% of your final grade:

1. Presentation

  • Total presentation time should be 30m;
  • We suggest:
    • 15m to describe motivation, challenge, and work done;
    • 3m video;
    • 5m demo;
    • 7m of Q&A.

2. Report

  • Maximum of 50 pages, including:
    • Executive summary (1 page);
    • Background - describe team, motivation, challenge
    • Schedule
    • Overview - summary of your concept / system / device / service
    • Process - describe your design process, prototyping, user research, iteration, etc. This is the main component of the report and should be summaries in terms of main insights;
    • Conclusion and future work;
    • Annex (not counting for the 50 pg. limit) with technical documents (architecture, system design, etc.) and user research reports (questionnaires, surveys, analysis, etc.);
    • Links to the source code, preferably on GitHub.

Both deliverables should be prepared by the whole team dividing the work in terms of the sections. The deliverables will be evaluated for their communication and design quality. You should aim at a very high-quality visual design rather than long textual descriptions.

Below are some examples of reports and videos. Your goal is to do better than that.
