PERIURBAN
PERI-URBAN AREAS FACING SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES:
SCENARIO DEVELOPMENT FOR THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF LISBON
Áreas peri-urbanas perante os desafios da sustentabilidade: desenvolvimento de cenários para a AML
Since March 2012.
http:/projectoperiurban.wix.com/periurban
Research financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Cience and Technology (FCT).
Objectives of the project are: identifying typologies of peri-urban areas based on its ecological, social, economic and
institutional characteristics for the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (TASK 2);
creating visions for peri-urban areas according to their typology by developing scenarios for case
studies based on:
(a) understanding structural and functional dynamics of each typology, taking into account:
-ecosystems services provided by each typology, identifying vulnerabilities;
-economic activities, their innovative potential, and evolving demand patterns;
-perceived quality of life of resident population and their expectation toward future
developments;
-governance models and spatial planning systems at local scale, assessing its potential
for change;
(b) expert and stakeholder participation, identifying the specific challenges that need to be faced
by each peri-urban typology - formulation of sustainability quality objectives (TASK 3);
bridging scientific and practice:
-communicating knowledge acquired in research and into useful and relevant information for
planners and decision-makers,
-developing strategic planning guidelines and governances models with stakeholders
-envisaging orientations to deal with the challenges faced by peri-urban areas (TASK 4).

EQUITY AND EFFICIENCY IN THE URBANIZATION PROCESS: A LAND READJUSTMENT EXECUTION MODEL
A equidade e eficiência no processo de urbanização: modelo de execução perequativa
http://projectopercom.ist.utl.pt/novo/organizacao_en.html
Since February 2012. Financed by FCT
Objectives of the project are: (1) the characterisation and critical analysis of the LP's land readjustment practice in Portugal; (2) to contribute to proposing a more efficient land readjustment execution model to address the problem of the conjugation of interests in the urban development process.

LAND USE COVER CHANGE IN CONTINENTAL PORTUGAL: CHARACTERIZATION, DRIVING FORCES AND FUTURE SCENARIOS
Alterações de uso e ocupação do solo em Portugal Continental: caracterização, forças motrizes e cenários futuros
Since 2010. Research financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Cience and Technology (FCT).
Objectives of the project are: (1) to provide a reliable and clear picture of the changes that occurred in land use and land cover (LULC) in Continental Portugal, in the decades 1950s, 1970s, 1990s and 2010s; (2) to identify and understand the major driving forces of those changes; (3) to form the main alternative scenarios of LUCC until 2040, using a spatial model; and (4) to use all this LUCC information to study energy demand and Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions and removals. We've designed the research plan for LANDYN according to these four objectives, each correspondent to a project task. All of our study will be performed at two scales: Continental Portugal and regions (NUTS 2).

URBAN RIVER BASIN ENHANCEMENT METHODS
2002-2005. Led by Hr Wallingford. Funded by the EC under the 5th Framework
The overall objective of URBEM was to provide a comprehensive framework to facilitate urban watercourse rehabilitation that takes into account the regional variations in modification and use of watercourses across Europe.
Work package 4: Aesthetic evaluation
Led by Instituto Superior Tecnico
