This project intends to develop an automatic terms extractor. Considering that terms are special linguistic units which obey to certain linguistic constraints (syntactic constraints when these terms are composed by more than one lexical unit, morphological constraints when these terms are one single word), and considering that large specialized corpora are today more easily available for Portuguese, it is possible to develop a tool to extract from these corpora a list of potential terms. Both mono-lexical (made by only one lexical unit) and multi-lexical terms (formed by more than one single lexical unit) are considered.
The goal of the project is: (1) Fully automatic acquisition of both simple and complex terms; (2) user driven acquisition of simple and complex terms.

The primary goal of this project is integration. It is intended as a vehicle for bringing together, for the first time, research contributions from all the members of the recently created Spoken Language Systems Lab (L2F - Laboratório de sistemas de Língua Falada) of INESC ID. Hence, it will integrate teams with very different expertise - speech processing, neural networks and natural language processing - who will join efforts to develop a conversational interface for accessing and retrieving online information.

In order to enable students to learn to read another language, a good tutoring system should give them much opportunity for practice and make the experience as engaging and personalized as possible. The REAP.PT system is being designed to complement teacher time by giving the student documents to read and questions about new words they have seen in the documents. It will personalize the work by choosing texts in Portuguese that are at the reading level of the individual student, presenting words that that student needs to learn and having documents on subjects that the student is interested in. Questions will be automatically generated about the meaning of the words that the student saw in a document and reports will be given to the student and to their teacher
