Grades for the answers provided to the short quiz questions are now published online.


Short quiz questions for the invited seminars

The "short quiz" questions regarding each of the invited seminars/lectures have been published online, on the course webpage.


Students that are formally enrolled in the course should preferably use the Fénix system to submit their answers to the short quiz questions.

The deadline for delivering the answers to the last set of "short quiz" questions is December the 28th. Deliveries beyond this deadline will not be considered.


Change in the room assigned for the TI classes

Starting this week, classes for the "Research Topics" course will take place at the same time (i.e., Fridays by 5:30PM), but now in a different room (i.e., in IST Alameda at room C10, which is located in "Pavilhão Central").


First class for the "Tópicos de Investigação" course

Classes for the "Research Topics" course will take place on Fridays by 5:30PM, in IST Alameda on room F2.


The first class for the course is now scheduled for the September the 30th, this way allowing for new PhD students to finish their registration process at the DEIC programme. 

The first class will introduce the course and some fundamental concepts, explain the organisation for the course, and it will also present the evaluation methodology.

Students from the PhD programme at the Faculty of Sciences in the University of Lisbon (FCUL) will also be attending the classes at IST Alameda. Prof. Alysson Neves Bessani will coordinate the participation of FCUL students in these classes.

In brief, the plan for the lectures associated to the course is as follows:
  • 1 : Introduction + Presentation of the Course
  • 2 : Research in Computer Science (CS) and Engineering
  • 3 : Technical Writing + Tools
  • 4 : Research Methods and Experimental Design + Research Ethics
  • 5 : Bibliographic Search
  • 6 : Publishing + Technical Presentations + Publishing Ethics
  • * : Remaining Lectures : 5 keynote presentations from researchers in different CS fields

The course evaluation is based on two components, which will be detailed in the first lecture:
  • 80% - individual research project developed under supervision of a DEI Professor, usually the PhD advisor
  • 20% - answers to "short quiz" questions about the invited keynote presentations
