Changes in the evaluation method of Physics Seminar

13 abril 2020, 18:22 Luís Paulo Da Mota Capitão Lemos Alves

In the recent "Information COVID - 19 (11)" from the President of IST, it was decided "To promote, in all evaluation activities, the evaluation of knowledge by remote means, through existing platforms or to be made available".
Consequently, in 2019/2020 the attendance to live Colloquia or Lectures/Talks (e.g. the Colloquia of the Department of Physics) will not be possible, and the evaluation method of Physics Seminar is modified as described below.

Evaluation method with a single component (100%)
Online view of 6 Lectures/Talks with duration > 40min (various higher education / research institutions have these contents freely available) from an area outside the specific track of the student's thesis.
- For each event, the student should compile notes that summarize the most important findings / results reported and expressing a critical view of them ( max. 500 words per essay; typically one page A4).
- If the students attended live Colloquia/Lectures/Talks before the quarantine period, they can submit the essays relative to these live events, complemented by others prepared from the online visualization of talks, up to a maximum of 6.
- Each essay should clearly identify
* the title of the lecture/talk
* the name of the lecturer
* the name, place and date/time of the event (if available)
* the weblink to the talk or the website of the event
- The 6 essays should be submitted to the Fenix platform (via Projects), until 01/07/2020 at 23:59.

Consequently, in 2019/2020 the evaluation component of the UC "Physics Seminar" will be composed exclusively by the
Attendance to Colloquia or to Lectures/Talks (weight 100%)

The PhD Open Days (2020 edition) will take place between 23-26 March 2020.
Participation in this event is a component of the assessment of the Physics Seminar course (40% weight).
Students should present a poster during this event, addressing the state-of-the-art in the field and the status/future plans for their doctoral work.
The evaluation will focus on the quality of the poster and the presentation (checked the assessment criteria here).
The poster template can be downloaded here.
Note the deadline for applications – 15th March.
Note the deadline for submitting the poster to Physics Seminar via Fenix system  - 27/03/2020 (23:59)
