[IPMA] Participation in the GelAvista programme

GelAvista is a citizen science program that was launched on February 2016 by IPMA, created with the purpose of monitoring gelatinous (Medusa) populations in the Portuguese oceanic coast. This program, together with the data from the coastal station off Cascais (Portugal), has been providing the first information on diversity, distribution, abundance and seasonality of gelatinous organisms in Portugal. The GelAvista program is crucial to identify vulnerable areas, where gelatinous populations may have large impacts on zooplankton populations, including fish larvae, with successive costs for pelagic food webs. The entire success of the program relies on the public's participation and, as such, several efforts were made in order to improve its outreach.

Several types of Activities available, to be agreed with candidates:

1. Daily observations of gelatinous in a specific transect on the shore;

2. Develop the GelAvista App to iOS, the website and improve the GelAvista App for Android;

3. Participate in all GelAvista activities, namely the communication and promotion of the GelAvista Programme.

[IST] COMPUWEB --- Computing over the Web

The Internet (Web) is used for many purposes (business, education, leisure, interchange, offer of software, etc.), but its (real) use for computing is (in my opinion) very insufficient. Making computing available is self-promoting (to get employment) and useful for companies (remember the advantages of the academia-industry link).

We intend to make computing available "over the Internet" by: (a) using Engineering problems already solved; and (b) wrapping them in suitable Web informatics. We have numerous instances of solved problems in various branches of Engineering and Maths (Operational Research, Statistics), which will benefit from an improved usability and better IT techniques.

Essentially, making computing available. What for ?

For the student, this project can make his work and capabilities visible (this is the Internet era !) and thus improves his chance of getting a job. For me, the proposer, the project also improves the usability and efficiency of my resolutions of the problems mentioned, making them more attractive to companies or colleagues.

[IST] Linear Programming over the Web

The Internet (Web) is used for business, education, leisure, etc., but its (real) use for computing is (I think) very insufficient. Making computing available is self-promoting (for employment) and useful for companies (and the academia-industry link).

We intend to make Linear Programming (LP) available "over the Internet" by: (a) using CPLEX (under legal terms), already roughly done; (b) wrapping it in suitable Web informatics, and (c) the same for (simpler) Lindo.

LP is an essential mathematical subject used in many industrial activities (petrochemical, automotive, logistic, etc.): one of the "top 10 algorithms" of the 20.th century (for me, the best). CPLEX (now with IBM), in C, was made for use (as API or "library") with any (IEEE compliant) language. It is available to us (academically) and is considered to be the best package for LP. (The student need not be or become a specialist in LP.) My environment will benefit from an improved usability and better IT techniques.

Essentially, making CPLEX and Lindo known to the student and available over the Internet, using various languages. What for ?

For the student, Linear Programming is one of the most important mathematical techniques, both for its power (computational efficiency), and its usefulness in many branches of science, technology and business. This project can make his work and capabilities visible (this is the Internet era !) and thus augments his chance of getting a job. For me, the proposer, the project also improves the usability and efficiency of my resolutions of the LP algorithm ---namely easing its connection to various languages---, making it more attractive to companies or colleagues.

[IST] The collaborative view of a research project

Research is much more than having an idea and prove it. A strong collaboration between researchers allows ideas to germinate and become mature. In this activity the student will work in a research team and understand the whole pipeline of a research process: he (Ricardo Lopes) will collaborate in all the discussions, test the hypotheses, help writing a a paper and, at the end, disseminate the achievements in a short talk. His research team will be a professor (Luísa Coheur) and several PhD students.

The topic of the research — Automatic Generation of Paraphrases — is not the focus of this activity, as the research point is established, and the whole code is available. We expect the student to run a set of experiments in strong collaboration with a professor and a PhD student. Also, every week, for one month, there will be a meeting with several other Phd students, where the student will discuss the obtained results, and get feedback about them. He will participate in the writing of a paper and, at the end, the student will give a short talk about the findings to a research group.

[IST] Building data to feed a question generation system — the crowd power

Question Generation is a well established task in the area of Natural Language Processing. In order to build systems that automatically generate questions from texts, based on supervised or semi-supervised learning, collections of questions are needed. In this activity, students will collaborate with their peers and also with a professor and a PhD student to build two datasets that will allow the training of a questions generation system.

The main goal of the activity is to make students understand that beyond several AI systems, there are teams that work together to create datasets that will allow to train such systems. There are rules to build such datasets, as guidelines need to be well defined, people need to discuss different situations and the final dataset needs to be validated. Students will work in teams (ideally, two teams will work in parallel, and results will be compared) and will build two datasets with questions regarding two different domains. They will meet with their peers, and discuss among them. They will also meet with a senior professor (Luísa Coheur) and a PhD student, who will provide them the insights of this activity within a research environment.

[MUSEU VIRTUAL]

IST-ENTRAJUDA-SABER COM LÓGICA

[MUSEU VIRTUAL] We Computers - Nós Computadores - Museu Virtual

[NEETI] Branch activities and divulgation of the course

The main purpose of this activity is for students to help us, in the various presentations that our branch has to do in this semester, in order to introduce the course for the secondary school students. Also, and besides that, we need help in other kind of activities that our branch will organize along the semester and we would like to count with them for that too.

The main goals we intend with the type of activities we are proposing are to get the students which are not part of our branch to know the type of work we do, and at the same time, referring here a little to the part of the divulgation, create conditions for all doubts about our course that may come from the secondary schools' students that come to visit us, to get clarified.
