Lab #2 - Audio Editing

In this class we will use Audacity, an Open Source software to manipulate audio. Please bring headphones to this lab. smile

lecture subjects:

  • Sound as a wave: frequency, amplitude, pitch;
  • Waveform representation of sound;
  • Sampling;
  • Clipping;
  • Non-destructive Audio editing;
  • Destructive Audio Editing;
  • Audio lanes;
  • Channels and stereo;
  • Mix down;


This class will look to understand the following examples:

1 - Remove noise from a recording of a dialogue stained by background noise. The focus is to understand what parameters affect this type of editing.

2 - Select and cut a portion of an audio track (dialogue from the previous step). Insert silence time to separate 2 blocks of dialogue.

3 - Edit Pitch of the first block defined in the previous step and edit Tempo in the second block. The aim is to understand what the difference between the two concepts.

4 - Removal of voice component with a song composed for instruments and voice (on a single track). The goal is to try to understand how and why this type of editing is possible. It will be essential to understand what the limitations of this method and why they exist.

5 - Apply reverb effect of the composition of the previous step. The aim is to try to understand this is in effect and that means its parameterization.

Finally, the exercise for this lesson is the release of two tracks: music and dialogue. The objectives are:

  • Select and cut a block of dialogue;
  • Scatter / repeat a block in a track at different instants corresponding timeline of the music track;
  • Change volumes of music when dialogue is audible (fade in / out);
  • Free application of effects studied (and others) to both tracks.
