User Experience @ Nokia Siemens Networks

For many years, usability engineering techniques have been taught, known, and used by academia, research institutes, and independent consultants. However, the acceptance of related best practices and the added value of usability are continuously overlooked, by most research and development companies. As a result, products fail to meet end-users requirements - while businesses lose time-to-market and competitive advantage.

Nowadays, customers and end-users are even more demanding. They want products that meet their expectations while easy to learn and remember, efficient to use, having a low error rate, and pleasant to use. An enhanced user experience might be the key factor in providing the winning edge.

In this presentation we will overview how usability is currently embraced and applied in one of the largest telecommunications solutions supplier, Nokia Siemens Networks. From the main challenges, we will focus on the tools, processes, and necessary steps towards a wider acceptance of usability.

About the author:
Frederico Figueiredo is a User Experience Manager at Nokia Siemens Networks. Received a MSc degree in Intelligent Systems and Multimedia in 2007, at Instituto Superior Técnico, where he also graduated in Information Systems and Computer Engineering in 2003. He works as a Researcher at INESC-ID, since 2002, in the Visualization and Intelligent Multimodal Interfaces group. Since 2006, he is a member of the SIGGRAPH Education Committee. His main areas of research include usability engineering, agile development, and online communities.
