Assessment comprises
3 components:
Project (group of 3): Written work (max. 5 pages) and Oral presentation (20 mn) as a result of reading a research paper to choose with teacher's approval, containing theory and/or applications of at least one of the chapters:
A. Poisson processes
B. Markov Chains in discrete or continuous time
C. Renewal theory
D. Fundamentals of stochastic processes and special topics (e.g. random walk, branching processes and queueing theory)
The project should include:
(1) summary of the relevant results in the paper;
(2a) reproduction of results (better with variations and simulations are allowed) or,
(2b) inclusion of an exercise (with resolution) within the chosen subject.
(50%) Individual written exam: duration of 2h, graded in [0,20] with required minimum of 7.
Allowed material: calculator machine, PE tables and formula sheet, and one more free page.
(10%) Compulsory attendance of at least (70%) Oral Presentations from colleagues with respective grades and a short justification (about 1 paragraph). Before each presentation one sheet to be filled in will be given, acording to the following 5 criteria to evaluate [grade: 1 (lowest) - to - 5 (best)] colleagues' work:
(1) organization and clarity of presentation
(2) connection with the course subjects
(3) significance, importance and originality of the work
(4) completeness of the work (Introduction until References)
(5) level of complexity/difficulty
