Students were introduced to freely-available software and servers, namely MiGA and antismash, used in the taxonomic classification of metagenome-assembled genomes and in the metabolic exploration of complex metagenomics datasets, respectively.

An overview of metagenomics workflows for the study of microbial communities in a cultivation-independent fashion was provided.

A case study (the coral microbiome) was presented to illustrate how metagenomics approaches can help illuminating the diversity, function and biotechnological potential of host-associated microbial communities which are highly recalcitrant to cultivation in the laboratory.
