Dear all, as last Friday was a holiday and the MFA topic is important and difficult, Prof. Fernanda will repeat the class of Monday this Friday. Next Monday I will introduce energy balance on Monday class and Friday 18th I will merge two classes (energy balance and energy in buildings) and we will get back to the normal schedule.BestCarlos Silva

Consider a company that produces and sells smartphones. This company is currently assessing the environmental impact of its activity, representing this assessment of the major challenges in this sector. This analysis is crucial, given the increase in smartphone
production as a result of its widespread use and its useful life increasingly reduced.
i. The various operations involved (from extraction of raw materials to the final use of the product);
ii. List of components for assembling a smartphone;
iii. Main flows;
i. product design engineer.
Exercise 3 -
Put yourself in the position of an LCA analyst at a company that produce paper bags, where you are asked to take a LCA for a new type of bag. Set the objective and scope for your evaluation.
Exercise 4 -
Present the generic life cycle of a Washing machine. Set a LCA study, the goal and the boundary that fits the goal you defined, and also the functional unit.

MOOC Energy Services

Dear all
The MOOC Energy Services will start next Monday October 1st. You can register already in the IST MOOC platform courses.mooc.tecnico.ulisboa.pt.
PLEASE USE YOUR IST ID credentials (istXXXXXXX)
Registration will be available until Ocotber 14th.
This MOOC is divided in 4 topics that are covered during the classes of week 2, 5, 6 and 7, namely:
1. Introduction to Energy Systems: 1st - 7th October
2. Energy Services in Buildings: 8th - 14th October
3. Space Heating and Cooling: 15th - 21st October
4. Hot water, Lighting and Electrical Devices: 22nd October -28th October
For each topic/week, a set of videos related to the multiple subtopics will be released, and, for consolidating the presented concepts, there will be a quiz after each video. These successful completion of these quizzes correspond to 10% of the final grade of the MOOC.
At the end of each topic/week, a mid-term assignment needs to be completed. The successful conclusion of the 4 mid-terms corresponds to 50% of the final grade.
At the end of the 4 weeks/topics, there will be a final evaluation to conclude your participation. This final evaluation is composed by an assignment that needs to be concluded by November 5th.
Between November 5th and November 11th, you will be requested to review your peers assignments and only then, you will have concluded the final evaluation. The successful conclusion of the final evaluation corresponds to 40% of the final grade.
It is expected that you will follow each topic every week, but if you get behind, you have the chance to catch up until November 5th.
The MOOC will close on November 5th, at 23H59M. After this date, you will no
longer be able to participate in the MOOC and use it for the evaluation.
Remember
that the grade of the MOOC may be used to replace one question of the exam, but
it is not mandatory and you will always have the chance to improve the grade
during the exam.
So, if you want to participate,
please register at courses.mooc.tecnico.ulisboa.pt, using your IST ID (to be
easy to link it to your grade)
