Tuesday, 24/03 17h-18h30   Pathway prospecting I

In this class, we'll explore the problem of designing new metabolic pathways that don't exist in nature, called pathway prospecting. We'll look at case-studies from the literature to understand the approaches that scientists have used to create new metabolic pathway. We'll also talk about pathway prospecting tools, which are computational programs that can aid in the task of designing new metabolic routes, and that we'll use in lab 3.

In this class, we'll have an overview of the field of synthetic biology and one of its basic units: circuits. The type of circuits and their applications will be discussed. In the second part of the class, we'll talk about the main 3 types of metabolite sensors (based on transcriptional regulators, based on FRET an based on RNA switches) and their applications.

 In this class, we'll approach the problem of finding new metabolic pathway to produce an unnatural compound: methacrylic acid. We'll use pathway prospecting tools (Reactpred ) and Biochemical databases (KEGG, BRENDA, Atlas of Biochemistry and MINE)
