Week 8
5 junho 2026, 17:24 • Nuno Gonçalo Pereira Mira
Students,
- Although classes are finished, I will maintain the tutorial support on MON at 10.30 for the groups that I am supervising in projects. Use the same link as before;
- We will have the short oral discussions about labs on THU 11 9h-12h30 and TUE 16 9h-12h30 (rooms announced later). Students can divide yourselves in between the two dates. We will do 9 grups on THU 11 and 8 on TUE. Please compile a list of the groups that will show up on each of the days and send that list to me (via your representatives Tiago, Rodrigo or Sandro) up to TUE next week. We need to prepare the oral discussions.
-Now it is time to keep moving your projects and later on i will announce the instructions for printing your posters and how the session will be organized.

Week 7 in MCF (UPDATED)
29 maio 2026, 13:30 • Nuno Gonçalo Pereira Mira
Students,
For the final week of MCF we will:
- The final poster presentation is scheduled for JUN 22nd at 10 am (Main hall of the central building) and the oral discussions of lab4 will be on JUN 11th from 9 am onwards. There is a 20 min slot per group. Just need to bring your submitted results (table with different models+Optknock+lab results).
- The data for the HPLC is now available for MON, TUE and WED shifts. See section Practical classes. Remember to submit on Fenix the tables with the experimental results and the final conclusions on whether or not your mutants produced more EtOH than the wt or not. If you don't have a wt in your cohort of examined strains, ask another group from your shift;
- Papers for the second flipped class are also available in the section practical classes. The flipped class of MON will happen between 2-4pm in room V107 (Civil Engineering Building) while the flipped class on TUE will be from 11.30-13.30 on room E2.
- Practical classes next week are not mandatory. I'll be in the lab where we had classes and you can show up to clarify doubts about calculations or merely to do it. I will be on the tutorial class (HERE) to speak with the groups requiring assistance with project development at 10.30 am.
Have a nice week,
NPM
Week 6 in MCF
24 maio 2026, 17:16 • Nuno Gonçalo Pereira Mira
Students, in week 6 of MCF:
- We will have the final lab class for yeast-based fermentations to produce EtOH, where you will conclude the analysis of your fermentations in the lab and place the samples running in the HPLC. For this second lab class, you just need to be in the lab where you were last week (6th floor, South Tower). You'll be with me this week. For the groups having practical classes on TUE and WED, please be at the lab between 9.30 and 10.30, as I will be with your colleagues and it is the best time to take your samples from this day;
- We will have the first tutorial sessions for project development. These will be online and you have the links available in the previous announcement. I will talk with one group at each time, with the exception of project 14 where I will receive the groups at the same time (14A, 14B, 14C). Those of you having Susana as the main supervisor will have class with her, you also have the link available in the previous announcement
- The calendar of the curricular unit was updated to reflect: booking of the poster presentations day on JUN 22nd; the second journal club to be held next week on the theoretical classes (divided in two, as last week). Next week's practical classes will be used to analyse the results you got from lab3, at the HPLC and modelling, and to work on project development.
- The 2nd journal club will involve analysis of papers as in the 1st, but only students wanting a second chance will submit another video for grading. Since i was unable to give you some feedback at this stage, you have now available in the section "practical classes" feedback that colleagues have given to the material you have prepared. Use that, and also what you have seen yourself, to decide on whether or not you would like to take a second shot next week. The videos for next week will have to be delivered until MON 8 JUN.
See u next week,

Projects assigned
19 maio 2026, 15:02 • Nuno Gonçalo Pereira Mira
Students,
In the section projects, you can already find the project that was assigned to each group. Note that there were several collisions with multiple groups asking for the same projects. In these cases, a raffle was performed to attribute projects that had not been selected to groups that ended without any project assigned. This was the final distribution.
All projects supervised by me will have kick-off sessions next week on the tutorial class, ON MON at 10.30 HERE. Groups will have meetings individually (group by group) with the exception of groups from projects 14A, 14B and 14C that will have a common meeting. If you want you can organize yourselves in a schedule of meetings assuming we will take 10 min per project.
Projects supervised by Prof Susana Vinga should direct your talks to her and will also have a kick-off on MON at 10.30 HERE. Meetings should also be individualized per group.
The students doing the project supervised by Prof Miguel Teixeira should directly email him to make the preliminary meeting.
Let's keep working to move this forward students,
Week 5 in MCF
16 maio 2026, 12:17 • Nuno Gonçalo Pereira Mira
Students,
in week 5 of MCF we will:
i) have two sets of practical classes, one that is the normal practical class and the other that will happen in the theoretical class. Students having practical classes on MON can come to the theoretical class of MON (and are free on the TUE theoretical class); students that have practical classes on TUE come to the TUE theoretical class (and are free on MON) and students from WED shift may chose if they want to attend on MON or TUE theoretical class; The protocol for both practical classes are now available in the practical classes section;
ii) The theoretical classes (that in this week are practical) of MON will happen in room P12 (Math building) and the theoretical class of TUE will happen on room Q4.1. These are better classrooms for practical classes. Attention to the change in rooms! All practical classes will happen at the Biological Sciences lab (South Tower, 6th floor)
iii) The list of strains that will be tested by each group, based on metabolic simulation, is now available considering the information you have placed in the shared Excel sheet.
iv) You need to choose your projects ASAP (check previous announcement). In this week you should book a preliminary meeting with the main supervisor of the project to start working. Tutorial classes start regularly next MON25th at 10.30 am. There are remote classes with the main supervisors of your project (either me or prof Susana). Groups working with me can join the class HERE.
Let me know if you come across issues or doubts.
Have a nice weekend
