Files to be sent for the tests
1 abril 2020, 11:41 • Viriato Sérgio de Almeida Semião
Dear students,
As far as the files you have to submit to me for the tests are concerned (for tomorrow and all the other tests), you must submit one file in zip format containing all your resolutions (see below description).
You must name this file as firstname_familyname_student number.rar. For example, Manuel_Vieira_80906.rar.
This zip file must contain:
1) The excel file dully filled. Name it equally: Manuel_Vieira_80906.xls
2) A4 pages with the resolution of the problem, all of them identified in the top with your name and number. The format may be one (only one) of the following:
2.1 READABLE photos of each hand written resolution page (if unreadable I will not grade it): e.g. Manuel_Vieira_80906_photo1.jpg; Manuel_Vieira_80906_photo2.jpg, Manuel_Vieira_80906_photo3.jpg, etc.
2.2 Word file with the resolution (this involves, may be, too much time): Manuel_Vieira_80906.doc
2.3 PDF file with the resolution (this involves, may be, too much time): Manuel_Vieira_80906.pdf
Any question, do not hesitate to ask me.
Best regards
Operation of the discipline during the remote lecturing period
13 março 2020, 11:50 • Viriato Sérgio de Almeida Semião
In this period of remote learning, and after the very good experience of a conference lecture, the discipline of Thermal Equipments will operate as described below.
I) Functioning scheme
1) In addition to the already existing transparencies of the theoretical lectures, problems statements list and supporting pedagogical texts, I will put in advance extra supporting material for each week during the remote lectures period.
2) This new material is constituted by: i) a series of fundamental questions covering the subject under study in the week that students should be able to answer by themselves after the study; ii) problems statements for the practical lectures; iii) any other additional material considered relevant.
3) Students will study by the supporting pedagogical texts, available on the webpage of the discipline since the beginning of the semester, the subject under teaching prior to any videoconference lecture or videoconference meeting for tutorial assistance.
4) Videoconference lectures (that must be in the official established schedule) are all sheduled and students know all the details to attend them, which will be focused on (but not limited to):
i) theoretical lectures: answering the fundamental questions previously made available; this means that students are supposed to have studied the supporting material;
ii) problems lectures: solving the problems for the lecture.
II) Assistance to students:
1) There is a forum (Equipamentos Térmicos) subdivided in topics (one per week) in the webpage of the discipline to discuss weekly the content that students are studying. The use of the forum has no schedule and is already in operation. Every time a student poses a question in the forum I receive an email alerting me. So, sooner or later, the question will be addressed.
2) Students can use the already scheduled period of assistance (Wednesdays, 14h00-16h00) to clarify their doubts. For that, students willing so, must pose a question in the forum in advance, preferably until the day before, and I will either answer in the forum (whenever it is feasible) or schedule a videoconference with the student for that period to clarify the doubt.
III) Remote assessment
Since all the non-remote assessment tests have been cancelled, the tests of Thermal Equipments have to be replaced by remote assessment.
The assessment has now 3 tests.
Test 1: This test weighs 30% of the final mark and has 2 parts. Part1 consists of a multiple choice questions to be answered in the Excel file already available. Part2 consists of the resolution of 1 problem. The complete statement (part1 and part2) will be released on 2nd April at 11h30. Students have a maximum of 1h30 after the statement release to submit the entire resolution (both theoretical and problems) by email.
Test 2: This test weighs 30% of the final mark and has 2 parts. Part1 consists of a multiple choice questions to be answered in an Excel file to be made available. Part 2 consists of the resolution of 1 problem. The complete statement (part 1 and part 2) will be released on 21st April at 18h00. Students have a maximum of 1h30 after the statement release to submit the entire resolution (both theoretical and problems).
Test 3: This test weighs 40% of the final mark and has 2 parts. Part1 consists of a multiple choice questions to be answered in an Excel file to be made available. Part 2 consists of the resolution of 1 or 2 problems. The complete statement (part 1 and part 2) will be released on 29th May at 15h00. Students have a maximum of 2h after the statement release to submit the entire resolution (both theoretical and problems).
Tests repetition.
Any student can repeat any of the 3 tests and the best mark between a test and its repetition prevails. The structure, procedures and limit times for the tests repetition are exactly the same as for the corresponding tests. The release times of the tests are:
Repetition of Test 1: The complete statement (part 1 and part 2) will be released on the 21st July 15h00. Students have a maximum of 1h30 after the statement release to submit the entire resolution (both theoretical and problems) by email.
Repetition of Test 2: The complete statement (part 1 and part 2) will be released on the 21st July 18h30. Students have a maximum of 1h30 after the statement release to submit the entire resolution (both theoretical and problems) by email.
Repetition of Test 3: The complete statement (part 1 and part 2) will be released on the 21st July 11h30. Students have a maximum of 2h after the statement release to submit the entire resolution (both theoretical and problems) by email.
Allowed consulting elements for all tests:
1 – For the theoretical part of any test or test repetition it is not allowed any consulting at all.
2 – For the problems part:
a) for test 1 and test 1 repetition, you can consult exclusively the chapter 11 (heat exchangers) of the
book “Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer” by Incropera et al. and the slides “heat_exch_3.pdf”
that are at the webpage of the discipline. Nothing else!
b) for test 2 and test 2 repetition, you can consult exclusively the supporting texts “refrig_part_1.pdf”
and “refrig_part_2.pdf” that are at the webpage of the discipline. Nothing else!
c) for test 3 and test 3 repetition, you can consult exclusively the book “Combustion and Incineration
Processes” by Walter Niessen. Nothing else!
The minimum mark, as established from the beginning of the semester in the discipline assessment method, for a successful assessment in any test is 8.
Students with a final mark greater or equal to 16 will have the chance to defend their mark by making an oral examination. In case they do not want to do the oral examination, they will have 16.
