Option 1 – Specific Product development strategy – will consider a tutorial class, with the entire course based on individual needs, to be established for each student, based in the main design tasks: 1. Definition of the main specifications/Formulating problem. • Detailed description of the product/equipment/system specifications, as well as taking into consideration all the normative and legal constrains and technical demands. Assess and review of the technical constrains and/or requirements, also the assessment of the applicable ISO standards and legislation should be considered. • The output of this task will be a set of design orientating principles and targeting values to be used in the subsequent design phases. 2. The conceptual design/Generating alternatives. • It starts with a bibliographic review of product/equipment/system under analysis. • Then a creative development phase, in which the assessed configurations will be cross checked against the specifications defined in task 1. New configurations, resulting from the combination or modification of previously assessed prototypes, or from completely new concept, will be devised. • The output of this task will be the definition of a configuration for product/equipment/system. 3. Analyzing alternatives. Based on basic sciences and computational skill from mathematics, engineering models are prepared and developed to estimate the performance of each design alternative, i.e. predict the behavior of each design candidate. 4. Evaluating alternatives. Comparison of the predicted performance of each feasible design candidate to determine the “best” design alternative. Multiple evaluation criteria are considered. 5. Detail Design Depending on product/equipment/system developed by each student, detailed design activities will be considered here in order to achieve the real product/equipment/system. Option 2 – optional Advanced Engineering course (to be selected by the student, with relevance for the thesis; requires approval by SC). Any course offered at IST or in any partner institution (FEUP, UM, MIT) in a relevant theme may be considered. Students are expected to: • Develop different solutions and achieve a satisfactory solution for their research/design, that could be materialized in a model, prototype; • Identify and understand relevant engineering specifications, testing and validating results or solutions.
