COVID-19

This page describes some useful information about how we (faculty and students) will deal with the pandemic in the context of this course. Particularly, there's information about enrolments, team formation, lectures, studios, office hours, and evaluations.

Enrolments and Team Formation

  • Students will be automatically assigned to either A or B groups when they enroll in any IST course (depending on their IST ID); you can't choose which group you belong to!
  • Each group should attend in-person classes every two weeks; In this course, you only need to attend studios
  • For project #2 and #3 you will work in teams of 4 people (ideally); 2 students from the A group and 2 students from the B group; we will deal with exceptions on a case-by-case analysis
  • This means that during studios, half the team will be attending in-person and the other half will be remote
  • The first couple of weeks will be used to define the teams; you can use our Discord server (see next sub-section) to find a team

Technologies

  • Zoom - We will Zoom for lectures and studios. If this is new for you, check IST's recommendations on how to use the platform
  • Discord (https://discord.com/) - We will use Discord to facilitate communication between all students, teams, and faculty. Discord is particularly useful for asynchronous communication and ad-hoc video conference. We will send a link to our discord server to all enrolled students.

Lectures

  • We will use Zoom for all lectures; that is, all lectures will be offered via videoconference
  • Faculty will frequently use Break Out Rooms to assign various group tasks during lectures
  • All lectures (video and slides) will be made available afterward
  • A Discord server will be used as a secondary communication channel in case Zoom fails
  • Please check the Lectures webpage to enter the Zoom meeting

Studios

  • Studio sessions should be attended by all students
  • Each team will have half of its member in-person (either A or B); the other half will be working remotely
  • It is crucial that we take all the necessary precautions during these sessions (e.g. social distance, hand hygiene, wear a face mask, etc.)

Office Hours

  • Office hours will be offered via videoconference
  • You should schedule your timeslot with faculty (via Discord or email) the day before

Evaluation

  • The evaluation method in this course is solely based on projects (1 individual project and 2 group projects)
  • Most evaluations will take place during the studio sessions
  • Presence is mandatory in the studios that will be evaluated
  • Students that are allowed to go to classes that week (either A or B) need to attend the studio in-person (unless otherwise authorized by the Graduation Office, e.g., at-risk students). The remaining students need to be online.
