1) Lab sessions will be supervised by Dr.
Rui Galhano dos Santos and will take place at the Laboratory of
Inorganic Chemistry (LQI), on Floor 0 of the Chemistry Building.
2) Students should organize in groups of 3, and enroll in Fenix before February 26th.
3) Each group will have 4 laboratory sessions, covering polymer synthesis and characterization, on weeks 2, 3, 4, and 5 (Mondays 9:00 to 12:30), according to the following calendar:
In these sessions the following experiences will be carried out:
- EXP1A and EXP1B: Step-growth polymerization (polycondensation): synthesis of Nylon 66 (2 routes: bulk and interfacial);
- EXP2: Synthesis of poly(vinyl alcohol) by hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate);
- EXP3: Free radical photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA).
4) The experimental protocols are described in the Lab Guide.
5) IMPORTANT! Only students who comply with the safety standards
described in the Laboratory Safety section and who
have sent the signed form "BASIC SAFETY RULES IN LABORATORIES" before February 26th may attend the lab sessions
6) Before each Laboratory Class the students should prepare the experiment, reading the corresponding protocol.
