Lab 4 - User Research Plan

Goals

  1. Plan the user research
  2. Conduct user research through inquiry or observation techniques;
  3. Describe what users do / need / want / expect / think;
  4. Confirm and refine your stakeholders;
  5. Define user needs and context of use.

Procedure

For this lab, you need to contact the stakeholders of your project and conduct user research in order to understand their needs, expectations, and current challenges. You should prepare a shortlist of research questions beforehand and what user research techniques need to be used. These include interviews (open or semi-structured), questionnaires, observation of users in the field (direct or indirect) or while interacting with competing products. You should choose the most appropriate technique(s) to answer your research questions.
The information collected should be analyzed to define what users need and expect, as well as the context in which they will use your project. You should strive to highlight the most interesting results that can be used as a source of inspiration for future designs.
This process shall be interactive; that is, users shall be contacted more than once and as many times as needed to confirm the information and obtain answers for any doubts/questions that might remain after the first contact.

Presentation

Each team has 5 minutes to present their work. The presentation needs to be previously uploaded to your website.

Evaluation

The evaluation will be based on:
  • Quality of presentation [0.25v];
  • Participation in class discussions [0.25v];
  • User research methodology [1.0v];
  • Describe users' needs, expectations, and context of use [1.5v].
