Practical Classes
First class
In the first practical class, during the week starting on the 14th of September, we will be discussing the following articles:
- Don't Let Architecture Astronauts Scare You
- Introducing the Pragmatic Architect
- Who Needs an Architect?
Note: To access some of these articles you may need to be within the IST's network or go through it (e.g. via a VPN or the authenticated proxy).
To ensure a lively and interesting discussion, you should read the papers previously and make a list of two or three topics that you would like to discuss or to highlight during the class.
Second class
For the second practical class, during the week starting on the 21th of September, you have to read the article on Scalable Web Architecture and Distributed Systems by Kate Matsudaira and identify three non-functional requirements together with the techniques used to fulfil them.Third class
In the third practical class, during the week starting on the 28th of September, we will continue to work on the article Scalable Web Architecture and Distributed Systems by Kate Matsudaira.Fourth class
In the fourth practical class, during the week starting on the 5th of October, we will be discussing the following articles:
- Learning from Failure, Part 1: Scoping and Requirements Woes
- Learning from Failure, Part 2: Featuritis, Performitis, and Other Diseases
- Learning from Failure, Part III: On Hammers and Nails, and Falling in Love with Technology and Design
Additionally, we will start working on the Graphite case study. You should read the case study description before the class. Each group should identify the architecturally significant requirements.

Fifth class
In the fifth practical class, we will continue working on he Graphite case study. Each group should prepare three quality attribute scenarios, covering different qualities, and the tactics used to achieve the scenarios, to be discussed during the class.
Sixth class
In the sixth practical class, we will continue working on the Graphite case study. Each group should prepare three quality attribute scenarios, covering different qualities, and the tactics used to achieve the scenarios, to be discussed during the class.
Seventh class
In the seventh practical class, two groups will present scenarios and tactics for the ASR of Nginx and Apache and all students have to read the Nginx case study to participate in the discussion after the presentations.
Eighth class
In the eighth practical class, two groups will present scenarios and tactics for the ASR of Continuous Integration and Jenkins and all students have to read the Continuous Integration case study to participate in the discussion after the presentations.
