Light links on IoT, Industry 4.0, and PLCs

12 fevereiro 2019, 10:05 José António Da Cruz Pinto Gaspar

While the classes do not start, let me post some links that you may browse without any bibliographical needs. First, a short remind of what humankind does not want industry to be, shown in a funny way:
- The "Factory Scene" from Chaplin's last silent film "Modern Times" (1936)

Those were old times, making people fear "inhuman work". Nowadays, one may effectively experience the opposite, namely "saving inhuman work". Engineering just needs to pave the right ways:
- Chinese factory replaces 90% of human workers with robots
- Tesla's future is completely inhuman — and we shouldn't be surprised

Interestingly, one would expect that the revolutionary aspects of industrial development, namely Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 , would dramatically change the industry basic units, the Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). However, markets show kind of the opposite, PLCs are being upgraded in a careful, smooth, way:
- IIoT and PLC: Coexistence, Not Confrontation
- How Will Industry 4.0 Influence the Future of PLCs?

Hoping that you enjoy this course on Industrial Processes Automation,
