Oral Presentations

5 março 2026, 15:15 Baiqiao Chen

Please find the guidelines and schedule for the upcoming group presentations below:

  • Format: Each group is required to present their work using PowerPoint slides.

  • Participation: This is a collaborative effort; every group member must present a portion of the work.

  • Duration: Presentations should last between 10 to 15 minutes. Please manage your time carefully, as a small penalty will be applied to presentations exceeding 15 minutes.

  • Schedule & Confirmation: The presentation schedule is available [HERE]. Please confirm your group's availability by typing "YES" in the designated column of the form.

  • Rescheduling: If your group is unavailable at the assigned time, you may arrange a swap with another group. This requires the mutual agreement of all four students involved (from both groups). Once an agreement is reached, please report the change to the lecturer for final approval.

Week 3 Exercise

2 março 2026, 14:07 Baiqiao Chen

Based on the model created in Week 2

  • define material properties and element type
  • define element size
  • mesh the model to generate elements and nodes
  • define the boundary conditions
  • possibly, solution control and solve the current load step
To learn this week:
  • SELECT
  • Components
  • Mesh tool
  • Various element sizes for different structural members
  • Distance measurement by APDL Kdist,p
  • Command AGLUE or AOVLAP to join plates
Deliverables:
  • jobname.db
  • jobname.mac
  • please include your student number in the jobname

Week 2 Exercise

23 fevereiro 2026, 10:37 Baiqiao Chen

Exercise on ANSYS M-APDL modelling, meshing and macros
You are requested to create an FE model of a stiffened panel with four stiffeners, as shown in the attached 3000.jpg, with the following information:
E=205.8 GPa,  λ=0.3, σy=315 MPa,
frame spacing along longitudinal direction 4300 mm, spacing between two stiffeners 815 mm,
plate thickness 17.8 mm, web
height 463 mm, web thickness 8 mm, breadth of flange 172 mm, flange thickness 17 mm.
The student can choose one Shell element type, and an element size based on his/her preference.

Suggested steps:
1 Geometric model
2 definition of element type and material properties
3 Glue all entities, property attributes, element size definition, meshing

Deliverables:
1 filename.db, as an ANSYS model
2 filename.mac, as the APDL macro/script

[No Classes] XIII Naval Engineering Conference – Feb 24 & 25

21 fevereiro 2026, 21:23 Baiqiao Chen

Dear Students,
As requested by the MENO Coordination, I am writing to inform you that our classes scheduled for February 24th and 25th will be suspended.
This is to allow and encourage all LENO and MENO students to participate in the XIII Naval Engineering Conference, which will be held at the Anfiteatro Abreu Faro (IST).
This conference is a premier event for our scientific area, and I highly recommend you take advantage of these two days to engage with the speakers and industry experts.

Additionally, please be informed that on Monday, I will assign an ANSYS exercise. You will have one week to complete it. Please note that this exercise is not graded; its sole purpose is to help you become familiar with the ANSYS GUI and APDL modeling.

Best regards,
Prof. Bai-Qiao Chen
