Welcome to Applications of Data Science and Engineering 2025/2026!

In this course, pairs of students will work on a data science challenge proposed by a non-academic partner or academic partner from another scientific area (e.g., biomedicine, social sciences, economics, security).

As a reference, the expected amount of effort to work on these challenges is approximately one day/week for a semester.

We will have an open meeting on September 24 (10AM, hybrid session in room F3 and zoom) to cover course-related questions, including goals, timeline and evaluation.

In the meantime, a few notes on the logistics:

How can I select my challenge?

  • Your faculty hosts will post a list with several challenges until the end of September. You're also invited to independently source a host with a challenge that fits your interests and redirect that information to us for approval
  • During the subsequent two weeks, we will invite you to contact the proponents of your preferred challenges and secure one. Once the selected data science challenge is approved by us, you can start tackling it!

What are the expected outcomes?

  • A report to be delivered by mid January, containing the methodological choices, empirical validation, and critical discussion. You can use this template (with "anonymous=true" option) under a maximum limit of 6 pages (plus up to 2 pages of appendices)
  • Participation in the final AECD workshop (short presentation and tentative brief peer review of 2-3 reports) to be conducted until mid February
