Applications of Data Science Workshop 2022

14 fevereiro 2022, 21:33 Francisco Correia dos Santos

Dear students,

Thank you for all your submissions. Congratulations to all! We will keep the submission system open until tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb 15) for some last-minute adjustments. Hope it helps. Only the latest version is kept on the server.

It is now time to set up our Workshop. Our Workshop will be held online with the use of Zoom in one week (Monday, February 21). Each talk should take 12-14 minutes, leaving a few minutes for questions from the audience. The zoom link is already available here

Instead of creating an entire programme from scratch (which may not fit your constraints), we adopted a self-organized programme. To this end, we created an editable spreadsheet where you can add your name(s) and title in your preferred slot. This spreadsheet can be found here.

Afterwards, we will assemble a final programme following your preferences as closely as possible. More slots could be added if needed.  Yellow cells correspond to slots open to every student of the course. Pink slots are reserved for discussions where only group members, professors of the course, and advisors are present. If your work does not involve privacy issues or delicate information for your host institution, please go for the yellow slots. Otherwise, please select one of the pink slots.

We are pretty sure that it will be a lot of fun to hear each other's presentations. Naturally, we will be delighted to have your project advisors with us. They are most welcome to stop by. However, this is not mandatory.

The title of your talk may differ from the title of your report. Please feel free to adapt it to make it more appealing.

Regarding your presentation, please note that the goal is to be entertaining. We suggest that you design your presentation to this end.

Thank you so much for your help!!

All the best,

Francisco, Rosário, and Mário
(the MECD team)

Welcome to the Applications of Data Science Course!!!

10 setembro 2021, 10:44 Francisco Correia dos Santos

Dear students,

Welcome to the course of Applications of Data Science and Engineering 2021/22 !!

Our meetings will start on Friday,  Oct. 8, at 16h30 (via zoom; see section "Zoom links"). In this first meeting, we will present an overview of the goals of the course, evaluation, and other issues.

In this course, each student or group of two students will work on a small problem of data science, ideally proposed by a non-academic partner or academic partner from another scientific area (e.g. biology, medicine, social sciences, or another engineering area).

The amount of work is approximately one day/week for a semester, but, of course, time can be allocated differently.

We will collect and post several options. However, we strongly invite you to independently find a host and supervisor that better fits your interests. Of course, we will always be available to help you with this quest.

Students can start working on the challenge proposed whenever they reach an agreement with the proponents. Grading is based on a small report and an oral presentation.

In the meantime, please let us know if we can be of further help. Many thanks again for your preference!

Best regards and see you soon,

Mário A. T. Figueiredo
