Commercial finite element computer programs are now available for the simulation of complex forming parts and practice seems to indicate that the majority of research groups are focusing on applications rather than on developments. A critical gap is now being formed between the researchers that are developing the computer programs and those having the know-how on the metal forming technology. This course is concerned with this gap and it is designed with the objective of enabling students to acquire a good understanding of the most important theoretical and numerical ingredients necessary to develop and proper utilize metal forming computer programs based on the flow formulation. The course is intended for students and specialists of metal forming whiling to use and understand the fundamentals of the flow formulation and related computer programs in the industry or research.


The course starts by an overview of the fundamentals of the mathematical theory of plasticity and follows with the presentation of main theoretical and numerical topics that need to be addressed during the development and utilization of finite element and meshless computer programs based on the flow formulation. The course is also focused on the application of numerical modelling by providing comparisons between computer estimates and experimental data for selected metal forming operations. The overall comparisons comprise a wide range of top-ics such as material flow, geometry, strain distribution and forming load/torque. The following programme outlines the contents: 1) Mathematical Theory of Plas-ticity; 2) Finite Element Flow Formulation; 3) Process Simulation Using the Finite Element Flow Formulation; 4) Meshless Flow Formulation; 5) Process Simulation Using the Meshless Flow Formulation
