From Reinforcement Learning Models to Neuropsychiatric Disorders

Abstract: Reinforcement learning is an area in which there has been extensive interaction between machine learning, psychology, and neuroscience. As a result, we now have detailed computational models of the psychological and neural underpinnings of reinforcement learning in humans. In my research group, we develop and use these models, together with empirical techniques such as behavioral experiments and brain imaging, to shed light on the psychological and neural underpinnings of certain neuropsychiatric disorders. This talk will describe some of this work, focusing on one neuropsychological disorder—Tourette syndrome—as an illustrative example of the approach.
Short Bio: Tiago V. Maia is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, a researcher at the Institute for Molecular Medicine in Lisbon, and a member of the Coordinating Council of the Mind-Brain College of the University of Lisbon (Portugal). He did his Ph.D. in Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. Before returning to Portugal (his home country), he was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurobiology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University. Research in his laboratory focuses on the integrated use of computational modeling, brain imaging, and behavioral experiments to understand the neural bases of several psychiatric disorders. His work has been published in several leading journals (e.g., Nature Neuroscience and PNAS). He has also played a very active role in the development and promotion of the emerging field of computational psychiatry (e.g., serving as guest editor or guest co-editor for special issues on the topic for Biological Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, and Clinical Psychological Science). He was considered a "Rising Star" by the Association for Psychological Science.

Fundamental Research and European Funding

Abstract: Competitive science and fundamental research very often requires a good level of stable, bureaucracy-free funding. I will discuss my own experience with the Marie Curie, COST and European Research Council schemes.
Short Bio: Vitor Cardoso is professor of physics and leader of the gravity group at IST, Lisbon. He is a CERN Associate and is Chair of the COST Action GWverse. He is a world-leading expert in black-hole physics, strong gravity, and gravitational-wave tests of general relativity. Prof. Cardoso has a long-standing collaboration with the theoretical gravity group at Sapienza. During his visit, he gave a talk about black holes as fundamental physics laboratories and on the perspective of detecting effects of physics beyond general relativity with current and future detectors. Professor Vítor Cardoso is the author of a book and more than 150 scientific articles, received two ERC grants from the European Research Council, and in 2015 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Santiago de Espada, by the President of the Republic of Portugal.

Abstract: O empreendedorismo tecnológico ganhou relevo em Portugal nos últimos anos com algumas empresas tecnológicas a estabelecer-se como líderes de mercado no contexto internacional, como é o caso da Farfetch, Outsystems ou Talkdesk. Este período marcou também o surgimento de investidores tecnológicos, desde business angels a fundos de capital de risco. Esta conversa tem como objetivo desmistificar estes dois mundos do Empreendedorismo e do Venture Capital através da história pessoal da Cristina Fonseca.
Short Bio: Cristina Fonseca é empreendedora e investidora tecnológica. Co-fundou a Talkdesk, uma plataforma que permite às empresas criar seu call center na cloud. A empresa angariou quase US $ 125 milhões nos últimos anos e Cristina foi distinguida como "30 abaixo dos 30" pela Forbes em 2016. Estudou engenharia de telecomunicações e redes e especializou-se recentemente em Inteligência Artificial, depois de se formar no Programa de Soluções Globais da Singularity University. Atualmente, Cristina é Venture Partner da Indico Capital Partners, onde investe e ajuda startups de base tecnológica a lançar e escalar produtos globais. É Membro não executivo do Conselho de Administração da Galp.
