Course Integrated Master in Biological Engineering Integrated Master in Biomedical Engineering
Mission The Integrated MSc programme in Biological Engineering (MIEB) is aimed at training engineers to fill leadership positions in Biological Engineering and related areas, namely in the follow-up, development and research of biological processes and products and also in the project of biological industries. The Integrated MSc programme in Biomedical Engineering (MIEBM) seeks to form highly qualified engineers capable of analising and solving problems related to fundamental medicine and clinical practice, and to apply advanced technology in the search for solutions to the complex problems in healthcare. This program is transversal to several departments at IST being further enriched by a close collaboration with the Medical Faculty of Lisbon and the biggest hospital in Lisbon, Hospital de Santa Maria.

Outcomes At the end of the first three years the student is expected to have a solid background on analytical tools, engineering concepts and biochemical principles that will allow him to grasp and evolve on the more specialized knowledge associated with the second cycle.
Upon finishing the second cycle the student will have a high degree of specialization in one of the minors whilst having a broad knowledge covering important topics in all of the others and in higher degree engineering topics.
At the end of the first three years the student will have the required knowledge in analytical tools, medical principles and engineering concepts that will prepare him for a higher degree of specialization in the second cycle.
The emphasis on the second cycle is to provide transversal competencies. This means that upon completion of the second cycle the student will have a broad knowledge in biomedical engineering, covering both engineering and medical sciences with some degree of specialization in a minor.
Employment The MIEB will allow students to fill leadership positions in the follow-up, development and research of biological processes and products in the Pharmaceutical and Comestics, Agro-food and Chemical Industries, as well as in the Environmental and Biomedical Areas. They can also carry out activities aiming at the development of biotechnology-based materials, devices and processes in the new areas of intervention. They are also prepared to perform responsibility tasks in Laboratories of Chemical and Biochemical, Microbiological and Molecular Biology Analyses, in Design and Consultancy Projects, in Trade and Services and Teaching, in areas of Biological Engineering and related areas. The Master graduates in BE are particularly prepared to, and aware of, the need to conduct Scientific R&D and become entrepreneurs in Biotechnology. The Biomedical Engineers can work at universities, in industry, in hospitals and in governmental agencies regulating health systems. In the latter, they have generally coordination or interface responsibilities in engineering and medicine. They are responsible for carrying out tests on quality and defining safety and evaluation criteria. They may perform consultancy activities with the purpose of selecting and using medical equipment, and supervise their performance and maintenance. They can also customize and develop equipment for heath care systems and research. In industry, the biomedical engineers create in-depth, demanding projects on living systems and on the technology and participate in the design and test of new products. In research units, they may collaborate directly with doctors in subjects linked with physiology and imagiology.
