Course Bioengineering Biotechnology Biomedical Engineering
Overview The Doctoral Program in Bioengineering is offered by a consortium of three Portuguese Universities (Instituto Superior Técnico/Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade do Minho) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This program is a new multidisciplinary approach, which consists of an Advanced Studies one-year Course (1 st year toward a PhD and an Advanced Certificate upon completion) and a PhD research project (3 to 4 additional years) with possible training at MIT. Biotechnology has in recent times had extraordinary developments, namely in the fields of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetic and Protein Engineering, Stem Cell Biology and Bioengineering, Systems Biology, Synthetic Biology, and Nanobiotechnology. Bioengineering, which is the integration of Life Sciences with Engineering, is a central focus of science and technology in the present century. The doctoral program in Biotechnology of IST offers an advanced scientific and technological formation in this domain, forming specialists able to transfer these scientific and technological advances into the productive sector of the economy in a sustainable fashion. The Doctoral Program in Biomedical Engineering is a multidisciplinary program that results from the institutional cooperation between IST and the Medical Faculty of the Lisbon University. It is an innovative program and unique in Portugal which meets and upholds technologic inovation with the recent evolution in life sciences with awareness of current health care requirements.
Objectives
  • Promote new inter-institutional post-graduation training and opportunities, aimed at educating a new generation of leaders in bioengineering and technical innovation in Portugal.
  • Promote industrial and health-care biotechnology education and research that makes it possible for new start-ups, which implement new models of interaction between universities and enterprises, government, and society.
The objective of the doctoral program in Biotechnology is to offer an advance, inter-disciplinary, and up-to-date formation that prepares the 3rd cycle students for leadership positions in a career in Biotechnology (in Bioengineering or in the Biological Sciences), enabling them with the capacity to start and develop independent research and development projects, as well as with the capacity to start and develop entrepreneurial projects in Biotechnology.
  • Promote a third cycle multi-disciplinary education aimed at raising a new generation of leaders in Biomedical Engineering in all of its dimensions.
  • Promote the education and research in Biomedical Engineering that makes it possible to develop synergies between Scientific-Technologic areas of Engineering, Life Sciences and Health Care.
Designed for The Bioengineering PhD program aims to attract the highest performing students with degrees in Biological, Biomedical, Materials, Physics or Informatics Engineering and Biochemistry, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences who aiming to have a post-graduate training in Innovation and Leadership, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, Computational Biology Science and Engineering, Synthetic Biology, Nanobiotechnology, Drug Development, Biomedical Devices and Technology, Neurosciences and Health-care Systems. The formation offered by the doctoral program in Biotechnology prepares the future PhDs for leadership positions in research and development in Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic, Agriculture and Food, Chemical, Environmental, and Biomedical industries and universities. They are also able to develop biotech-based new materials, devices and processes in emerging areas of Bioengineering. They are also prepared to lead in Biochemical and Chemical, Molecular and Microbiological, Analysis laboratories, as well as in Project and Consulting offices, and in activities in Sales, Service, and Education in the area of Biotechnology. The PhD program in Biomedical Engineering is aimed at those with the 2nd cycle in Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Biological Sciences, Biophysics, Medical Physics, Mathematics, any Engineering branch, Medicine or any other 2nd cycle seen fit to preceed this program.
Employment The PhD holders in Bioengineering are expected have their professional activities in Research, Development and Leadership in the emergent areas of the program, namely in R&D institutions, universities, biotechnology and phamaceutical industries, hospitals and creation of start-up. The PhDs in Biotechnology are specialized in the development of scientific research and technological development in Biotechnology (Bioengineering and Biological Sciences) and in entrepreneurship in Biotechnology. Research, development and leadership in the areas covered by the PhD program in Biomedical Engineering in research institutions, higher education, enterprises in Biomedical Engineering and hospital centers both in Portugal and abroad.
