Mission The Master Programme in BIOTECHNOLOGY aims to provide students with high quality and up-to-date training in this highly interdisciplinary field, which joins Life Sciences and Engineering, at the level of a 2nd cycle of university studies. Future graduates will acquire the knowledge and skills required to enter the workforce in the Biotechnology sector or to pursue their studies at doctoral level.

This Programme has a strong focus in areas that have had significant scientific and technological advances in recent years, as it is the case of Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics and Cell and Tissue Engineering, and offers a way to face the new challenges of the strongly interdisciplinary and fast growing field of activity of Biotechnology. This Programme of the Department of Bioengineering incorporates the most updated knowledge and the latest technological trends and makes use of synergies and competences offered by other IST Departments, which contribute to the formation in interdisciplinary areas, namely in Bioinformatics, Structural Biology Medicinal Chemistry, Entrepreneurship. The Master will be taught by an academic staff that develops internationally recognized research in top level Institutions. Students will have the opportunity and will be encouraged to participate in on-going research projects at IST, in particular in the Associate Laboratory IBB-Institute of Biotechnology and Bioengineering. The Master Programme in BIOTECHNOLOGY allows graduates holding a 1st cycle or a pre-Bologna diploma in a variety of scientific and technical disciplines (for example, in the fields of Biology, Bio/Chemistry, Engineering, etc.) to acquire knowledge at the Master level in Biotechnology.
The MASTER IN BIOENGINEERING AND NANOSYSTEMS is a 2 nd cycle programme innovative and unique in Portugal, based on an advanced inter- and transdisciplinary approach between Engineering and Life Sciences, with a strong background in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering, electronics and informatics. The MASTER IN BIOENGINEERING AND NANOSYSTEMS is offered by the Department of Bioengineering in collaboration with other IST Departments, namely the Physics Department, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the Department of Chemical Engineering. The programme involves Faculty and Researchers belonging to three Associate Laboratories with IST leadership: IBB-Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering , IN-Institute of Nanotechnology ( INESC-Microsistemas e Nanotecnologias ) and INESC-ID . The students will have the opportunity and will be encouraged to participate in on-going research projects in these three Associated Laboratories. This Master programme is integrated in the IST priority areas of Bioengineering and Nanotechnologies. This degree course aims at offering advanced education in Bioengineering and Nanosystems with a strong background in the fundamental principles and methods of engineering and nanotechnologies and its integration with molecular and cell biology. Its graduates will have an expertise unique in Portugal, with simultaneously broad and deep knowledge at the convergence of the Nano-Bio- and Informatics Technologies and will contribute to the innovation and development of the advanced fields of biology, bioengineering, nanosciences, and nanotechnologies in the XXI century. Prospective Masters will have the competences to work in industry or to follow doctoral studies in these fields. The Master Programme in Pharmaceutical Engineering is a new 2nd cycle offered jointly by the IST and FF-UL on the campus of both institutions. This masters offered in Portuguese and English seeks to attract students with 1st cycle in the fields of science or technology and offer them a higher degree formation in an emerging and with high potential area. The Erasmus Mundus master's programme in Systems Biology (euSYSBIO) is a cooperation between Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal (IST), KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH) and Aalto University School of Science and Technology in Finland.
The aim of euSYSBIO programme is to train professionals who can cope with the expected future demands of a systems biology specialist. Due to the rapid progress within the field, learning to use the current tools and methods for getting and handling data in bioinformatics applications is not yet enough. New measurement techniques are being developed, giving rise to new forms of data with ever-increasing quantities. The euSYSBIO programme gives the students a solid back-ground in methodological sciences and hands-on experience in modern measurement technologies, thus providing the students the means for handling large quantities of data and using the information to make valid biological hypotheses, and then to test them.
One of the focus of this Master´s programme is the important societal problem of microbial resistance and the loss of effectiveness of most drugs over time. The interplay between drugs, toxins and genetic variability, in single cells and in cell lines, remain central concerns of systems biology and bioinformatics until this day. More specific research areas include cancer and neurological and psychiatric disorders, which are among the most important health issues facing Europe’s citizens today and tomorrow.
The EACEA (the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) awards scholarships for this Erasmus Mundus Master's programme.
Outline        
Outcomes Students enrolling the Biotechnology master will have, at the end of the second year, a strong formation, both wide and in-depth, in up-to-date Biotechnology. Students will gain invaluable hands-on experience with the latest scientific experimental and computational approaches and research technologies which will be very useful in this quickly moving transdisciplinary field.   At the end of 2nd year of the master in Bioengineering and Nanosystems the students will have a formation, both deep and broad, in these strongly interdisciplinary fields, at the interface between Life Sciences and Engineering, at a 2nd cycle level of university studies By the end of the 2nd year of Pharmaceutical Engineering the students will be able to contribute in a significant way to the technologic inovation, improvement of industrial competitivity and leadership in some pharmaceutical branches as well as to the tackling of public health issues in current or emerging therapeutic areas.

After finishing the programme, the students will be competent in designing and implementing mathematical and statistical models of complex computational systems, and have the necessary understanding of the underlying biology in order to apply and interpret computational methods in the context of systems biology.

The additional value of the Master's Course is that it provides the students with an opportunity to experience a multicultural education by carrying out studies in two different European universities in two different countries

This being a dual degree course, at the end of the two years students will have a Biotechnology Master Degree from IST, an Erasmus Mundus diploma and a Master Degree from either KLM or Aalto University, depending on where the first year takes place.

Employment The Master in Biotechnology offers strong experimental expertise which prepares professionals for this very active field either in small, innovative biotechnology companies or in a biotechnology division in large agri-food, chemical and pharmaceutical companies as well as in the Environmental and Biomedical areas. They are also prepared to be enrolled in high-standard PhD programmes and to perform research in international settings. The Master in Bioengineering and Nanosystems offers a broad education with a strong experimental emphasis in Biotechnology and Micro and Nanotechnologies. This is a unique offer in Portugal and prepares professionals for exciting industrial and for advanced (third cycle) studies in these emerging fields.

Pharmaceutical companies that, produce Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), have finished formulation & pharmaceutical products; biopharmaceutical companies; entities that regulate pharmaceutical activities both in Portugal and abroad; companies that produce medical devices, have activity in clinical pharmacology or work in the health care.

The skills learned at the euSYSBIO course, as well as the connections made during the course, prepare students for employment as an expert in biotechnology industry and/or for continuing their studies within PhD programmes.
