Next Wednesday, April 27th, at 11h30, the seminar "Oil Spills”, will be presented by Mr. Rodrigo Fernandes. Venue: Room V1.33, Civil Engineering Building, IST - Alameda Campus.

Rodrigo Fernandes is a researcher at MARETEC - Marine Environment and Technology Center from Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon University – Portugal), involved in R& D activities in water pollution dispersion modelling with special focus in oil and chemical spills, and operational modelling systems and downstream services.

He was the developer of the oil and chemical spill weathering modules in MOHID Water modelling system, and he was the creator of the operational modelling framework presently used in MARETEC. He is developing his PhD in Environmental Engineering (entitled "Risk Assessment of Oil Spill Incidents Supported by Numerical Modelling"). He has a graduation in Environmental Engineering and a Msc (pre-Bologna) in Ecology, Management and Modelling Marine Resources.

He is author in 9 peer-reviewed papers, 4 book chapters and more than 20 conference papers, and at the present time he is coordinating activities related to the development of numerical modelling tasks and technological tools for oil spill risk management in ISDAMP and ARCOPOLplatform EU funded projects.

Next Friday, April 22th, at 11h00, the seminar "Learning from offshore disasters: Piper Alpha and Macondo” , will be held, presented by Mr. Nicholas Thwaites.

Chartered Senior Well Engineer, 16 years broad based upstream experience in Drilling, Drilling Supervision, Well Operations Management, and Completion Design. 

Onshore and Offshore wells (platform and semi-subs); horizontal / ERD wells; coring (conventional coring & wireline coring); CBM exploration wells, horizontal wells, quadrilaterals and intersection wells; HPHT wells; Through Tubing Rotary Drilling (TTRD) and slim hole wells; slot recovery and well plug and abandonment; open hole and cased hole fishing; workovers; CT workovers and interventions, e-line and slick line interventions.

Cased / perforated completions; slotted liners; ESP and dual ESP completions; jet pumps; Progressing Cavity Pumps (PCPs).  Wellbore clean-ups and well tests.

Assignments in West and South Africa, Eastern Europe, UK North Sea, and Onshore UK. Co-author of 4 SPE papers.

Next Thursday, April 21th, at 16h00, the seminar “Material Balance Calculations: The unfashionable tool”, will be held, presented by Mr. Victor Alcobia.

Venue: Room Q4.2, South Tower, IST - Alameda Campus.


Victor Alcobia is a senior petroleum engineer with in depth experience of reservoir management, reserves estimation and audit and numerical simulation of a number of major fields. Gained a broad experience in petroleum engineering since graduation in 1976 (38 years). He has also gained experience of assessing a wide variety of oil, gas and condensate fields of varying permeabilities. Fields have varied from those of the North Sea to those of Angola, Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, Russia, and Middle East. He has also a large experience with a large number of commercial packages for petroleum engineering including Numerical Simulation. Victor Alcobia holds a MSc in Mining Engineering (University of Luanda, 1976), a MSc in Petroleum Engineering (IFP, Paris, 1984) and a MBA (Evening courses, University of Pau, 1989).

JONATHAN LOWE, Vice President - Strategic Development and Exploration.

Mr. Jonathan Lowe joined Nautilus in January 2007 as Chief Geophysicist. He was appointed as Exploration Manager in September 2008 and VP Strategic Development and Exploration in January 2013. During this time he has been a driving force behind the Company's successful exploration programs and exploration technologies. Prior to joining Nautilus Minerals, Mr. Lowe worked for BHP Billiton where he gained 12 years of global exploration experience, initially as a geophysicist and then as a business development manager.  

Mr. Lowe is a Fellow and Chartered Professional of AusIMM, and a member of the Society of Economic Geologists. He has a BSc (hons) in Geophysics from Curtin University, an MBA in Technology Management from Latrobe University and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Next Friday, April 1th, at 11h00, the seminar “Salt in Petroleum Exploration, friend or foe?" will be held, presented by Mr. Gil Machado, from Galp Energia.

Venue: Room V1.08, Civil Engineering Building, IST - Alameda Campus


A geologist with a degree from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon with an European Doctorate from University of Aveiro-Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic dealing with Stratigraphy and Petroleum Geology. Worked for Galp Exploration and Production as a Geoscientist since 2010 on all stages of exploration and development planning, from new opportunities to pre-development. Seismic interpretation and sedimentary fairways analysis using seismic attributes were some of the main work areas, including in salt basins.

Worked for Petreoleum Development Oman from 2012 to 2013 as a Stratigrapher. In PDO he was in charge of the Lower Paleozoic and PreCambrian Stratigraphy in the GeoSolutions team. Worked on well stratigraphy while drilling, well litho- and biostratigraphic correlation, refinement of biostratigraphic schemes among other tasks.
