SafeWalk: improving pedestrian safety using Bluetooth EVALUATED

Sensor technologies are increasingly integrated into road vehicles, while many pedestrians carry smartphones equipped with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This convergence creates a novel opportunity to enhance road safety by enabling communication between vehicles and smartphones. In this work, we present SafeWalk, a system that leverages Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication to transmit Personal Safety Messages (PSMs) from smartphones to nearby vehicles, with the goal of reducing pedestrian-vehicle collisions at crosswalks. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate its viability and assess reaction performance of user warnings. Beyond urban safety, the system also has potential applications in preventing vehicle collisions with livestock.
