A BIM-based solution to support earned value management in construction EVALUATED

Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology has considerably grown in the past few years and has become an essential tool in the area of construction management. The execution phase of a building project has always been sensitive due to time and financial constraints, but an efficient BIM implementation can greatly reduce those pressures. This thesis presents a tool which aims to support construction managers during this specific phase, particularly by combining BIM technology and the Earned Value Management (EVM) technique to allow the visualization of cost and time performance of construction works at a given time in a 3D BIM model. Using a mobile interface such as a computer or a tablet, the supervisors enter all the necessary input data in a Microsoft (MS) Excel table, or other interface, and obtain a BIM model updated according to a colours code system which shows the time and cost status of the project. Thus, the use of the tool will not only enable the managers to easily identify the sensitive areas of the project, but also categorize them in terms of their level of importance.
